Music February 24, 2017

James Vickery, the voice of disclosures ‘Flow’, releases his new track Lately today. His debut single ‘Epiphany’ was released back in November via Lemon Records, and was featured on Spotify’s New Music Playlists in UK, France, Portugal, Australia and New Zealand. Epiphany then went straight into the Spotify UK viral chart at #7, and was tipped as a ‘future hit’ by The Vodafone Big Top 40.

We’re predicting big things for James this year and caught up with him to get to know this upcoming artist a little better…

What made you start this music project, what is the story behind it?

I used to play Acoustic/Songwriter type stuff up until about a year and a half ago, purely because I wasn’t a producer and that was the only facilities I had available at the time. However the songs were always Soul influenced and I always knew which direction I wanted to take it eventually. When I got management in January 2016; that was when I was able to work with some great electronic producers and create the sound I always dreamed of making.

Can you tell us a little about your new debut track ‘Epiphany’, what is it about and how do you feel about the success it’s had so far?

Epiphany is a play on a classic love song theme. The main line in the chorus ‘You’re staring straight through me in your epiphany’ is saying that the opposing person finally realizes that what they have is something special, and they never want to let it go. I’m completely overwhelmed with the reaction so far. It’s my debut single and we literally just put it out not expecting anyone to catch on. I said in a year after the release I would love for it to reach 100k on Spotify…we did that in 10 days!

Would you say you look up to anyone in the music industry for inspiration, if so who and why?

I was lucky enough to grow up with the Disclosure boys. Watching them start from nothing and grow into what they are today is such a huge inspiration for someone like myself.

What do you enjoy the most, recording your tunes or preforming live if so why?

That’s a tricky one,  but having been locked in the studio for a year writing, I can’t wait to perform live again!

Are you collaborating with any producers or other musicians?

Yes, I’ve been lucky enough to work with a bunch of great producers! Maths Time Joy (who is producing my next single) just got nominated for a Grammy for his work on the Gallant album which is insane! Recently, I’ve also been working with fellow songwriters to mix things up as well.

What would we find on your music playlist, what type of music do you enjoy listening to?

I love the old school Neo-Soul vibes like D’Angelo, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu. Recently though I’ve been listening to a lot of Tom Misch, Loyle Carner, Chance the Rapper and Bonobo.

As a songwriter/singer what would you say is the most challenging and exciting thing about your career, what gets your creative juices flowing?

I think the most challenging thing would have to be to keep positive when things aren’t going as well as they should be! The most exciting thing is seeing your songs being sung back to you when you’re on stage – that is the best feeling ever. Most of my songs are really personal so I always try to write about personal experiences whenever possible.

How would you describe your music to others?

Chilled melodies and rich harmonies, with Hip-Hop production..?

What are you plans for the rest of the year, have you got an upcoming tour line up?

The next single is out today and the live show is well on its’ way. I’ll be playing some festivals this year and doing some really exciting shows- but I can’t say too much yet! Keep an eye out for it haha!
