Ahead of this weekends BPM music festival in Portugal we’re counting the days with some of the lineups main acts. After catching up with Scuba, we’re now chatting to Josh Wink ahead of the weekend to learn more about himself and Ovum recordings.
WHEN DID YOU START DJING, WHO WERE YOUR EARLY INFLUENCES?
Mobile DJing when I was 13. DJing in clubs and house parties when I was 18. I was into all kinds of music. Hip Hop, soul, new wave electronic and mostly Chicago House.
WHAT WERE YOUR FIRST PIECES OF EQUIPMENT?
Roland R5 drum machine, Roland TB303, Roland s-950, Roland 909
AS AN INTERNATIONAL DJ, THERE’S NOT MANY PLACES YOU HAVEN’T BEEN TO. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITES AND WHY?
I’m lucky to get to play all over the world, and it turns out that in all seriousness, Portugal is one of my favorite places to perform and visit! Always great parties and crowds! And I look forward to going back for the massive BPM festival!
HOW IS OVUM RECORDINGS DOING? ARE THERE ANY MAJOR RELEASES COMING OUT?
Putting out good music doesn’t always translate in sales. It’s frustrating! But we’re very happy with the caliber of the releases we have and have coming up for the rest of the 2017 year! Ovum releases music that resonates with our hearts, and we are happy to put out music that is good to US regardless of what feel it will sell and not following trends. We follow our feelings about good electronic music!
HAVING BEEN A PROMINENT FIGURE IN DANCE MUSIC SINCE ALMOST THE BEGINNING, I IMAGINE YOU’VE SEEN A LOT OF CHANGE. WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE BIGGEST EVOLUTIONS YOU HAVE SEEN?
The internet, digital music and digital production. The biggest change in the industry EVER!
BPM IS AROUND THE CORNER NOW, AND IN YOUR OWN WORDS, WHAT DOES BPM REPRESENT?
BPM has a great following of fans and DJ’s/Artists who will attend and play for them. It’s really amazing. I enjoyed playing for BPM in Mexico and you know from [earlier] how I feel about Portugal, so I’m going to be very happy! I am playing saturday night at Ya’ah Muul.
