Ahead of this weekends BPM music festival in Portugal we’re counting the days with some of the lineups main acts. Kicking off the series we caught up with international DJ and producer Scuba to find out what his influences are and who he’s looking forward to seeing across the weekend…
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF MUSIC YOU HAVE LISTENED TO LATELY? IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND?
I’ve been really into Avalon Emerson’s stuff recently. Her remix of ‘Octo Octa’ especially is one of my favourite tracks of the year so far.
YOU HAVE SUCH A UNIQUE SOUND. WHAT INFLUENCE HAS LIVING IN BERLIN HAD ON YOUR MUSICALLY?
I suppose what I do is a mix of the UK underground and German electronic influences. Moving to Berlin gave me a much better perspective of European sounds; in London it’s very easy to be insular and think that your immediate surroundings as the only thing that matters. But although London’s a key place, it’s only a small part of what’s going on globally.
WHAT’S COMING UP FOR YOUR WELL ESTABLISHED LABEL, HOTFLUSH? ANY SIGNINGS OR TRACKS TO LOOK OUT FOR?
I’m excited about Or:la, she’s a great DJ who’s been making some really good tracks too. And Terr has also been making a big impression this year. We’ve also got a really exciting techno signing in Glaskin, who are two brothers from Munich. And also TML from the US is doing some really interesting stuff. It’s great to have so many fresh new acts on the label.
WITH YOUR FORMER NIGHT AT THE BERGHAIN, SUB-STANCE, BEING A SUCCESS OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS, WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR BEST MEMORIES FROM THAT TIME?
The night changed a lot over that time. From the first one, which was a really UK-focused Dubstep (the real Dubstep that is) lineup, to the last one which was much more wide ranging. One of my favourite memories was Gilles Peterson playing Panorama Bar. And of course Mala’s set at the first party where he managed to crack one of the glass panels in the Berghain with a blast of bass pressure. Pretty impressive.
BPM IS FAST APPROACHING. WHO ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING?
I’m a big fan of Kenny Larkin, very much looking forward to catching his set. And also Nastia, Carl Craig and Stacey Pullen. Should be a lot of fun.
