Fresh off a tour with Ray BLK, and a recent collaboration with MNEK under her belt, Kara Marni is a star on the rise. She is part of a new wave of songstress; those singing with soul and pushing the boundaries of the R&B genre.

We sat down with the young singer-songwriter to talk about her musical journey, latest track ‘Golden’ and what she’s got planned for the forthcoming year.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN MUSIC?

I had always loved music and singing, but during my time at school I uploaded a YouTube video (my first ever) of ‘Loving You’ by Minnie Ripperton. I was overwhelmed by the response I got and that’s where it all started.

WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

I grew up listening to the vocal powerhouse Minnie Ripperton on the school run with mum. Aretha Franklin was also a regular too. And more recently when I heard Amy Winehouse, Jazmin Sullivan and Lauryn Hill, I felt the same way as I did listening to the icons of the 60s and 70s.

WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO WORK WITH IN THE INDUSTRY?

Production wise, Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi. Artist wise there are many! To name a few, I’m loving Khalid at the minute, as well as Col3trane, Daniele Caeser and H.E.R. There is so much amazing music and talent out there right now.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND TO SOMEONE WHO HAD NEVER HEARD YOUR MUSIC BEFORE?

I’d say it’s soulful R&B with sprinklings of pop!

WHAT INSPIRED THE CREATION OF YOUR NEWEST TRACK, ‘GOLDEN’; AND WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH MNEK?

‘Golden’ was inspired by the early stages of romance where you are literally seeing life through a golden lens. I wanted to write a song that encapsulated that feeling. MNEK is one of the most talented young artists/writers I have had the privilege of working with. We get on so well and he’s very funny too! I hope to write with him more in 2018!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE AESTHETIC AND FEEL OF THE MUSIC VIDEO?

It was filmed on Super 8 and I wanted it to tie in with the throwback sonic feel of the song. I would describe the aesthetic as romantic. It’s full of light and hope!

YOU WENT ON TOUR WITH THE FABULOUS RAY BLK RECENTLY. HOW WAS IT TO EMBARK ON A LARGE SCALE TOUR?

I’ll be honest, I was both overwhelmed and exhilarated at the same time. Firstly, to be supporting an act I was already a huge fan of, and then be doing it in different venues! It was adrenalin-fuelled from start to finish! Her fans gave me with such love and a warm welcome. I will never forget it. They made me feel like I was at home and for that I’m forever thankful. Ray is a consummate professional and it was inspiring to be in such company at work. I felt blessed.

HOW DID YOUR PREPARE VOCALLY, PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY FOR THE TOUR?

To prepare for something like this emotionally, you really have to train yourself to be able to engage in relaxation techniques that will see you through. Physically, I guess I’m already in quite good shape and exercising ties in well with the relaxation techniques I draw on. Mentally, I make sure I feel well-rehearsed so I can focus on my performance and on enjoying it! The end goal is that I always want the audience to have the best possible time when they come to a show!

ARE YOU PREPARING ANY NEW MATERIAL FOR RELEASE?

I’m currently finishing off my EP and in the new year will be back in the studio working on an album! you can definitely expect more from me soon!
