Northern Spirit: Don’t Miss Parklife 2018

Despite lacking Glastonbury’s longevity, Parklife has already become a landmark of the British cultural scene.

Given the thriving music scene in London, and the host of music festivals which have sprung up around it, anywhere further north can feel somewhat overlooked. However, by showcasing homegrown talent like neo-soul visionary IAMDDB, grime heavy-weight Bugzy Malone and experimental indie outfit Everything Everything, Parklife emphasises the city’s value as a cultural destination to rival any UK (or European) city.

The festival’s location within the city underscores Manchester’s rich musical history. Heaton Park, home to Parklife on the 9th and 10th of June this year, has been home to everything from gramophone concerts, to the sounds of Happy Mondays and De La Soul during the iconic ‘Cities in the Park’, to now-legendary gigs from Oasis.

Speaking of Oasis, any britpop fans will be happy to hear that Liam Gallagher will be returning to Heaton Park, for this year’s Parklike. Alongside Gallagher, you will be sure to find other crowd-pleasers, such as N.E.R.D and Lorde, as well as critically acclaimed acts such as Kelela and Sampha.

The festival is practically spilling over with talent, with the confirmed line-up including: J Hus, Nina Kraviz, The XX, Jesie Ware, Peggy Gou, Justice, Vince Staples and Shanti Celeste.

Whatever your taste in music, this is not one to be missed.
