We talk to Annie Woon, the Designer connecting hair styling with high fashion to create one-of-a-kind wigs, displays and installations.
Tell us about WOON?
Woon is a creative brand focusing on creating bespoke and conceptual wigs for a variety of clients, including celebrities, musicians, films and a variety of high profile designers. I started out studying law, however following a trip to New York and seeing the stunning window displays at Warner Brothers, I knew I wanted to work in the creative industries, so I founded Woon!
What is your creative process when creating your wigs? From your influences and inspirations.
I draw inspiration from many places, but mostly from nature. I love birds and flowers and I guess this can explain why my wig exhibition in 2013 was using the theme wonderland. Our Woon Wig Wonderland in Times Square featured more than 1,118 kilograms of art installations made from hair. The project took over a year to complete and the installation featured many different animals from swans and sheep, to squirrels.
What has been your favourite commission?
I have been lucky enough to work on many incredible commissions, with many inspirational people. Therefore it’s really hard to pinpoint my favourite. Most recently I have been working closely with a premier Haute Couture house on their events and subsequently the partnership has extended beyond the wigs to hair accessories as well! This has been really exciting for me, as I love creating gorgeous pieces.
What would be your ultimate project?
The best part of being an entrepreneur is the changes and challenges that come up (almost every day) so I never know what exciting project is around the corner. In the future I would love to work on something for Disney, perhaps Rapunzel will need a wig from me?
What do we have to look forward to for 2018?
We have several partnerships coming up with different designers and brands from around the world, so keep an eye out. I would love to hold another exhibition again soon so this is something we will be working towards in 2018. I am open to working on projects with anyone that has a passion for life. I always think positively and believe I can make it happen – nothing is impossible!
