The music of Alexander Fairchild is instantly gratifying. It’s a sweeping cleanse of a heavy heart in need of redemption. Like the way you can feel good after being emotionally wrung out.
Not one for introspection, the Toronto-born, NYC native is compelled to write it out, shout it out, stew in it for a little while. The result is a meticulous and sprawling manifesto of a man helplessly and eagerly in love.
FOR OUR READERS WHO DON’T KNOW, CAN YOU TELL US HOW YOU CAME TO BE A MUSICIAN?
My parents are musicians (Mum sings and plays guitar, Joni Mitchell vibes, and Dad plays guitar, James Taylor vibes) and I grew up on folk/rock. Guess it’s in the blood.
DO YOU FEEL THAT TORONTO IS A GOOD PLACE TO BE, CREATIVELY SPEAKING?
Yeah it is. It’s cold enough for long enough that it facilitates the process of art. Art is the process and nothing else.
WHAT BENEFIT DID THE MOVE TO NEW YORK CITY HAVE ON YOU?
It filled me with angst, what this kind Canadian soul probably needed, a bit of grit.
IS YOUR EP, ‘TOO YOUNG FOR NEW YORK’, A SENTIMENT THAT IS BASED ON PERSONAL EXPERIENCE?
It’s about being stuck in process. Most of life is lived between dream and fulfillment. That’s the whole story… Living in a city that’s making you wait for everything. And isn’t that life?
WHY DID YOU TAKE A FIVE YEAR HIATUS FROM MUSIC BEFORE WRITING THIS EP?
I took 5 years to hate music and then realize that I love music and started writing again. The break was helpful because it gave me distance to see me better.
YOU SAID YOUR PYSCHOLOGIST CALLS IT MINDFULNESS. DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS OR DO YOU RELATE THE FEELINGS TO SOMETHING ELSE?
Yeah I agree, I’m terrible at living in the moment and enjoying what’s in front of me. I’m changing that.
WHAT PURPOSE DOES MUSIC SERVE FOR YOU?
I am an artist, it’s part of how I am made. So my music is as important and as unimportant as apples to an apple tree. Here’s the fruit of a winters worth of sap, I hope you enjoy these. Oh and I’ll have some more next year, hopefully.
THE EP SURROUNDS THE IDEA OF LIVING IN MOMENTS AND ENJOYING THEM. WHILE ALSO STRUGGLING WITH OTHER ASPECTS OF LIFE WHICH PRESENT THE NOTION OF CONFLICT. IS THIS A FAIR PERCEPTION TO MAKE?
That’s really fair. I hope listeners take whatever they will. To use the apple analogy again, hopefully there’s something for everyone.
WHERE DOES YOUR JOURNEY CONTINUE TO FROM HERE?
More living, Reflection, Adjustment, Reflection, and Creation.
