Having only launched in 2017, UNDERAGE is already breaking boundaries within the fashion industry. Complimenting their SS19 collection ‘Lucid Dreams’, UNDERAGE continues to explore dark sexuality within their AW19 collection, inspired by the cult film, The Horror Picture Show and it’s impact on the sexual revolution of 1970’s Britain. Gender identity being a current hot topic is addressed through an eclectic mix of androgynous ensembles, blurring the lines between the sexes.
A shade of seductive, lipstick red empowers the presentation, creating an illuminating backdrop for the darker garments and the use of excessive layering successfully creates the perfect casual-luxe look. A ruffled velvet dress is caped in a tone-on-tone, large padded coat and accessorised with knee-high boots. A smart jacket is draped into a midi dress and a shorts suit is feminised in printed silk – completely merging traditional outfits with a modern twist. Gender identity is blurred with the use of boxy shapes and menswear attributes throughout.
Undulated hemlines help to add extra drama with movement, ensuring what may appear to be a casual look to grasp attention when worn. Ying Shen, the UNDERAGE designer, stays true to her background in textile printing and graphic design by implementing mixed-colour graphics in with her structural forms. Playful cut outs mirror grotesque elements and tiny accessories come in the form of discreet body parts. Whilst dark, the collection keeps a fun and youthful tone with a mix of patchwork colours, contrasting seams and finished with pop-like hair and make up.
Since graduating from Central Saint Martins, UNDERAGE has vowed to continue using traditional textiles techniques, striking graphics whilst pop-culture to maintain a youthful apparel.
