Thought romantic silhouettes and Punk references didn’t go together? Not for A.W.A.K.E Mode, the British Fashion Council (BFC)/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund 2019 nominee. A.W.A.K.E Mode (All Wonderful Adventure Kindle Enthusiasm) is known for their reconstruction and unique takes on these contrasting inspirations. Here they redefine being heroines in their Autumn/Winter 2019 collection.

The show was split into 2 sections.

Section 1 (BRIGHT LIGHTS ON): opens with a rippled and folded effect low neckline, long sleeved top with deconstructed trousers reconstructed as skirt using one of the legs. A perfect illusion of a skirt. This was followed by knitted see-through tops and dresses in navy blue, black and off-white, the effect of partly hidden and partly visible is very eye catching and sexy.

Beige and camel colour jackets (faux fur, leather, wool and soft cotton, all the materials to keep you warm in the cold weather) are also heavily featured across both sections of the collection.

Section 2 (LIGHT OFF): begins with a very low cut tartan dress (lots of tartan and check patterns featured on the second section of the collection). The Scottish inspiration was the “main character” of this section, as warrior-like big plaited hair partially or fully covered models faces like a protective balaclava. Crushed velvet, Elizabethan necklines and turbo-sized outerwear are the most eye catching pieces of the section. Whilst of course a navy midi dress with bared bosom got people’s attention, it highlighted a knowing tension between what A.W.A.K.E.’s heroines choose to reveal and conceal.

When the lights come on again, colourful and printed outfits come through on the runway. Multi-colour tartans got my attention, retained by a row of big safety pins on reconstructed tartan skirt.

Buttons and quilted multi-coloured tartan top styled with a liquid shine hot pants, it’s impossible to deny the Scottish and punk inspiration.

In conclusion, the collection breaks the Hollywood stereotype of romantically passive Heroines. A.W.A.K.E Mode shows you in the modern world, Heroines can be punks or rock stars, they can be romantic and punk at the same time, a modern world with modern silhouettes.
