Hosted by MTV Staying Alive at their studios in Camden, Kolchagov Barba’s SS20 collection was a tribute to the fight against the stigma associated with HIV. In remembrance of friends lost to the disease, the brand created an empowering memorial with an unapologetically optimistic aesthetic.
Founded in 2013 as a collaboration between designer Svetoslav Kolchagov and entrepreneur Emilio Barba, the brand has since become known for their fabulous feminine silhouettes, vivid colours, and uncompromising glamour.
We saw beautifully executed demi-couture eveningwear, in classic silhouettes reimagined. SS20 gave us elements of BDSM, with corsetry and dramatic dresses bound in silk ribbons and belts. A sweeping floral ball gown in luminous pewter was accentuated with shocking pink details and cinched at the waist, slit high on the thigh to reveal legs clad in matching stockings.
SS20 gave us voluminous corseted taffeta ball gowns and the briefest of cocktail dresses in bold primary hues, all bound tightly in bright satin ribbon. We saw mint green bustiers and sheer flowing skirts, fairytale ballgowns in glorious technicolour, figure-skimming silhouettes in softest satin, dramatic asymmetical kaftans, and a rosebud pink frock of fallen petals.
Kolchagov Barba gave us every colour under the sun, as long as it was bold, bright, and beautiful.
